Singing to Sibelius' honor

Yesterday the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius would have celebrated his 150th birthday. To his honor hundreds of Helsinkians came to the Senat Square to sing his piece Finlandia together.

Talking statues

All around Helsinki you can find lots of statues. But do you know who they are for and what the story behind them is? If not, then just go there. They will tell you themselves.

The statue talks to me

Now you find a small plaque next to them that shows you two QR codes. One is for the Finnish and one for the English version. Scan them with your phone and you can watch a video that will explain you everything you need to know.

Let Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Zacharias Topelius and many more tell you more about their lives and their own statues.

And if you don't have mobile internet on your phone don't worry. You can find a free wifi spot pretty much anywhere in the city.

Stations in timelapse

Train stations are usually pretty busy places. In his short film Tuomas Kaisti from hkistreet managed to take the hectic and stress out the daily traffic madness. Ironically he achieved that by speeding things up even more with a timelapse video. But see for yourself.

Have a nice start into the weekend!

Happy in Helsinki

Happy by Pharrell Williams has inspired people from around the world to make their own video about that song. Stephen Penny is working on a Helsinki version. But he needs your support:

Are you happy? Do you live in or around Helsinki? Do you want to be in a music video?

If so, we'd like to hear from you! We're creating a #HappyInHelsinki community project and would like both locals and expats to be a part of this project. We'd especially like to hear from you if you have a special talent or skill which you could perform, such as being able to dance.

Individual participants or groups will need to be able to perform during a continuous 4 minute moving shot. Please see www.24hoursofhappy.com for ideas of what we're after and what you could do.

If this sounds like you and you'd like to be involved, please contact Steve - stephenrpenny@gmail.com

- UPDATE: The video is ready. You can find it here. -

Say hello via video

Everybody likes receiving postcards and friendly calls. But why don’t you surprise your friends and family next time and send them a video instead. This is now possible from more and more shops and shopping centers in Finland. At the so called JoinMeTube stations you can record a video message and share them via email, Facebook, Twitter or Google+ for free.

JoinMeTube station in Helsinki

JoinMeTube was designed at Aalto University. The aim is to offer a free service for customers and at the same time social media advertisement for companies. That is why there is an ad attached to every video message. You should be aware of that before you share your message. On their Facebook page you can look up where you can find the JoinMeTube stations.
