Bright evenings are back

Spring is coming to Helsinki. Now also the meteorologists confirmed that the cold time of the year is over. In fact this March has been much warmer then what is normal for Finland.

First flowers

The first flowers raise their heads out of the still cold soil. In the parks around Helsinki the first crocuses can be seen.

Spring is now coming and the next days promise sunny weather with temperatures above 10 degrees. Enjoy the Finnish spring and have a nice day!

Winter is back

And it happened again. After the first days and weeks of sunshine and warm weather, right when people have forgotten about winter the Takatalvi catches us off guard.

snow in Punavuori

Middle and end of March are the most likely times for Takatalvi to hit. Many car owners will already have changed to summer tyres and many of you probably already put their heavy winter gear back down into the basement.

Up to 15 cm of new snow are expected. And it seems though that we have to deal with the wet sleet and winter weather at least until the end of the week. Then winter should really be over though.

Have a great day nonetheless!

Kauppatori comes back to life

The coldest time of the year is over and slowly the streets of Helsinki come back to life. As does the traditional market on Kauppatori at the Southern Harbor. Some tents are here all winter but now most of the other vendors are back again as well.

Have a stroll along the stands. Maybe you find something nice.

Last chance for skating

Are you still up for skating this season? Well, then you should be fast. Most ice rinks are already gone and also Jääpuisto at Rautatientori is not going to be open that long anymore.

Jääpuisto on Rautatientori

The big Jääpuisto ice rink will close at the end of the month. And depending of the weather might even stop opperating a little bit earlier. So if you still fancy some skating you should heard there soon.

Information on opening times and prices can be found on the Jääpuisto website.

Terrace season starts

This March brings some beautiful weather. And due to the warm and sunny days the terrace season starts a bit earlier this year. On sunny days you can now already sip a coffee, beer or cider outside. Mbar opens its terrace for visitors depending on the weather.

So enjoy the sunshine outside with your friends and have a great week!

Here comes the spring

Spring with its warm sunbeams seems to slowly arrive to Southern Finland. At least it looks like it and for the next two weeks the temperatures are not likely to fall below zero anymore.

Spring is close

The last snow and ice is melting. The plus degrees during the last days as well as the first sunny days have cleared most streets and paths already. And it looks as if the temperatures won't drop much anymore.

Have a nice Sunday!

White Helsinki in May

No, it's not snow. But the weather is quite strange at the moment in Helsinki. During the last days several hailstorms have passed through and made the streets look really winterish. But luckily it is too warm for the small ice drops to stay and they melt away withing minutes.

Unfortunately it seems like we'll have to bare a few more wet and cold days during the upcoming week before it gets warmer again. Have a good start into the week anyway!

Mantan Lakitus

Today Vappu starts with Mantan Lakitus when the Hagis Amanda statue at Kauppatori gets her vappu cap. At 18:00 a group of students will lower the white cap onto the statue as the opening of the Vappu celebration.

Mantan Lakitus 2013

You should definitely come there and see this spectacle that gathers a huge audience every year. Who ever has one brings their own white cap to the celebration to put it on and wave it at the time when Hagis Amanda gets hers.

Remember to be there early (at least 30 min) if you want to get a good spot. And maybe bring an umbrella with you. The weather might not be as good as last week.

Hauskaa vappua!

Welcome back to Linnanmäki!

Today at 13.00 Linnanmäki opens its gates again after the long winter break. As every year there is a new attraction in the park awaiting the guest. The new freefall tower Kingi measures a high of 75 m and drops at a top speed of 23 meters per second. From up there you also have a great view over the city.

The opening of course doesn't go without a big party at 18.00 with live music by JVG. During Mai there will be live program every Friday. And as always the entrance to the park and the shows is for free.

Have fun!

Got your Mämmi?

Do you already have some Mämmi in the fridge for Easter? For those of you who don't know what that is, Mämmi is a very dark porridge made from malt, rye, salt, sugar and some orange rind.

Mämmi at the supermarket

Don't let the look and the talks about it scare you away. Not every Mämmi is the same and it can actually be quite good. Also try it in together with either cream, milk or ice cream.

For more information on Mämmi also read this article from Yle News. There you can also find a nice recipe how to pimp your Mämmi.

Enjoy!
