Northern lights

Did you see this week's northern lights (or aurora borealis)? They were caused by a strong sun storm and were visible all the way down to Helsinki.

by Luminoucity

Even in the city the green and even yellow and red lights were painting the night sky. And amazing natural light show.

But if you missed it don't worry, the next northern lights will come for sure.

Christmas lights are coming

Yes, many shopping centers and stores have switched on their Christmas lights already. But the Christmas street lights on Aleksanterinkatu are still missing.

But today that will change. With a big Christmas parade through the center the city celebrates the illumination of the most important shopping street today.

The parade starts at 14.00 from Senaatintori. Of course also Santa Claus will be there.

Also don't forget to pay a visit to Stockmann's Christmas window which also will be opened today.

Ice lights without ice

It's way too warm for this time of the year and also for the beautiful ice lights (jäälyhty) that are common to make in Finland in the winter time. But with a bit of creativity even with this kind of weather ice lights are possible to make.

The blue light beam is back

The nights get dark again these days. This is not just a bad thing. Now the lights of the city can be seen again and with them the so called sininen viiva (blue line). It was installed last year to celebrate 135 years of electricity in Helsinki. The blue laser beam connects Observatory Hill (Tähtitorninmäki) all the way across Kopernikuksentie, Unioninkatu and Siltasaarenkatu with the Kallio Church.

You can see it every night from 18:00 to 02:00.
