Beer from the Ferry Island

Did you know that many of Helsinki's neighboorhoods have their own beer? Stadin Panimo from Helsinki is producing different brews for different areas.

One of them is Larun Lager from Lauttasaari. And it's not just all about the taste here - which is pretty decent - but also about the local connection. The watertower, Lauttassari's main landmark as well as the bridge are printed on the label.

Winter at the harbour

Today the snow started melting. But over the Christmas days we luckily had beautiful winter weather and yesterday even the sun came out for a while.

This is how it looked at Lauttasaari sailing harbor during that time.

The Finnish fall shows its most beautiful colors at the moment. And this weekend there should be no rain. So put on your warm coat and your boots and go outside.

What about a walk around the southern shore of Lauttasaari? Breath in a fresh sea breeze while walking through the woods and stop to watch the ferries passing by on their way to Tallinn and Stockholm. 

 

At the moment there is also an art path with several small installations along the way.

The living room of Lauttasaari

You want to watch the Euro Cup games in a cozy pub with a great and unique atmosphere? Then Kaunis Kampela is the right place for you. Called the living room of Lauttasaari by the locals all the games are shown there on two big screens. The interior is quite simple with its wooden chairs that kind of remind you a bit of the ones you had in school. Really nice atmosphere though and friendly staff!

The variety of drinks is quite amazing for such a small place. They serve beer from all over the world. To get an overview take a look at the beer folders they have that explain where the beer comes from, how it tastes and maybe even what the history behind it is. Or just ask the bar tender. They are happy to help you.

The drinks are not that cheap though. If you plan on coming more often or already if you want to spend a longer evening there consider getting a membership card for 5 Euros that allows you to get the special offers from the black board on the wall. The offers change monthly and you get really good beer for a quite reasonable price of 5,50 €.

They also serve tasty snacks at Kaunis Kampela (which translated means "beautiful flatfish") till late in the night. During the weekend they close at 2 a.m.

Nature in the city

One of the amazing things about Helsinki is that you can be surrounded by nature without even leaving the city. The southern part of Lauttasaari for example is a wonderful place for a walk through the woods along the coast. Some people even have their summer cottage (mökki) here. Especially in summer it’s beautiful there but already at this time of the year it’s worth a visit.

Another really nice walk in the Helsinki area is the tour from Lauttasaari to Torpanranta. On the way you pass the islands of Kaskisaari, Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari and are always close to the water. You get to see few of the nicest neighborhoods of Helsinki. At the end of the tour (takes around 1:30h) you can reward yourself with a rest at the quite pricy but beautifully located café Torpanranta while watching the kite skiers on the gliding over the icy bay. The weather this weekend is ideal for this walk. In the sun it is even warm enough to sit outside. Here some impressions from today.

A new (sunny) day has come

What a difference to yesterday the weather is. We have beautiful sunshine today. Amazing how dramaticly the weather can change this city's face from one day to the next.
