A foggy day

The fog got very thick yesterday in Helsinki. After a sunny Friday and Saturday the weekend ended grey and rainy. Some decribed the view as everything looking like Lonkero.

The next days might stay grey. But have a nice start into the week anyway!

Terrace season starts

This March brings some beautiful weather. And due to the warm and sunny days the terrace season starts a bit earlier this year. On sunny days you can now already sip a coffee, beer or cider outside. Mbar opens its terrace for visitors depending on the weather.

So enjoy the sunshine outside with your friends and have a great week!

Is the gloominess over?

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute this winter has been the gloomiest in over three decades for many parts of the country. Some areas of Southern Finland have gotten as little as under four hours of sunshine during November and just over five hours in December.

There is a good chance though that the darkest days are over now. Last weekend (Friday and Sunday) brought lots of light to the capital area and the forecast for the upcoming days looks pretty good as well. This also means that it might get colder and windier again. So don't forget to dress up warm enough. But also don't leave your sunglasses at home.

Have a good start into the week!

First signs of winter

This morning Helsinki woke up with a slight white cover. The first light snow fell last night.

But this most likely doesn't mark the beginning of winter. Temperatures are forecasted to rise again towards the weekend. But it shows that the cold time of the year is close.

Damn cold June weather

Hearing a foreigner complaining about Finnish weather is quite common. Normally that happens in the winter or spring and you can then always refer to the beautiful Finnish summer that makes up for all the coldness and darkness.

7 degrees yesterday in Helsinki

However this year things seem to be a bit different. Yesterday was by far the coldest summer day of the year with temperatures below 10 degrees in Helsinki. In some parts of Finland it even snowed. That hasn't happened in decades. Iltasanomat titled yesterday, that it's even colder here than in Alaska at the moment.

And all that a few days before Juhannus, the midsummer celebration and brightest day of the year. The temperatures are predicted to rise again but it will still be one of the coldest Juhannus weekends in a long time.

Sun and rain

The first half of May is over. With a really mixed weather. Sun, rain, wind and even hail and big changes in temperature.

Have a nice Sunday and hopefully a summery second half of May!

White Helsinki in May

No, it's not snow. But the weather is quite strange at the moment in Helsinki. During the last days several hailstorms have passed through and made the streets look really winterish. But luckily it is too warm for the small ice drops to stay and they melt away withing minutes.

Unfortunately it seems like we'll have to bare a few more wet and cold days during the upcoming week before it gets warmer again. Have a good start into the week anyway!

Takatalvi in Helsinki

It's probably the weather phenomenon foreigners have the most difficulties adjusting to in Finland: Takatalvi. Takatalvi is the returning winter that comes after there have been already the first warm days of spring like weather.

winter returns to Helsinki

After last weeks warm temperatures with up to 10 degrees winter came back with lots of snow during the weekend. But compared to last years -20 degrees in March this year is still rather mild. And don't worry, it is just a short cold period before the real spring will arrive in Finland and snow and ice will be gone for good.

Is the winter over?

Snow and ice are melting due to temperatures above zero during the last days.

Is the winter already over or is there going to be a Takatalvi (after winter)? What do you think?

First real snow

After weeks and months of rain and mild temperatures the winter eventually arrived in Helsinki. Now streets and houses are covered in snow and we have steady minus degrees.

First sunshine in 2014

The sun still exists. After weeks and weeks of dark gray sky I didn't believe it anymore. It seems like we would get rid of the clouds for a while.

The clear sky will also bring some pretty cold weather with it. Tomorrow the temperatures will fall below zero and on the weekend we can expect up to -15°C.

Where is the winter?

Sure the temperatures fall below zero from time to time. Still there hasn't been any real snow this year so far. And even in December we mainly had plus temperatures here in Helsinki so far.

But maybe the winter just waits a little while longer to strike hard in January or even later. However the weather is where you are right now, have a nice weekend!
