As dark as it gets

Yes, it is quite dark these days in Finland. You probably also go to work when it is still dark and come back long after sunset. But good news, it doesn't get darker than this anymore. Tomorrow is the shortest day of the year and then we'll get a bit more daylight every day.

So hang in there and put up a few candles to at least make it bright inside. Have a nice week!

Beware of ice and snow!

Helsinki is covered in thick ice and snow. And it looks beautiful. But be careful when you walk through the streets. Eventhough the city does its best to keep the roofs clean and the streets clean there is always the risk of something falling down.

Keep your eyes open and have a save start into the new year!

Bright light in the streets of Helsinki

The sun doesn't show up too often these days. But when it finds its way through the clouds Helsinkians appreciate it even more.

Especially in the morning and the evening the sun beams paint some beautiful pictures.

Have a nice weekend!

Wurst and more

Are you a fan of German sausage? It's rather tough to get a good Bratwurst or Currywurst here in Helsinki though. But luckily there is Maulito.

Currywurst at Maulito

The Maulito food truck drives around town every day and offers lots of typical German street food specialities. Also German service is included at Maulito since the owner himself, who drives the truck around is from Germany.

To find out where you can find Maulito check out their website. You can also order the whole truck for your event.

Give it a try and enjoy!

The beauty of a rainy day

The rainy weather also has its upsides. Yesterday the sun pained an amazing rainbow into the sky over Helsinki.

Progress at Keskuskatu

The construction work on the pavement of Keskuskatu is already going on for a while. The street slowly takes its new shape already though.

construction work on Keskuskatu

Big parts of the pavement are already done. Like Aleksanterinkatu also Keskuskatu will get underground heating so that ice and snow will melt right away during the winter.

It seems likely that the street will be ready for use again before the winter comes.

Mexican Street Kitchen

If you’re up for a good and filling snack while being in the center Cholo is the place to go. Owned by the same people that also run Patrona Cholo brings the great Mexican taste now also to the street. And believe me, it is real good stuff.

Cholo Mexican Street Kitchen on Lönnrotinkatu in Helsinki

They offer tacos and burritos to eat there or for take away. All dishes rage around 10 Euros, a decent price for what you get. The food is well spiced. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different.

This is really a place to try out and come back to. Go for it!

No parking for clean streets

The city is been cleaned from all the small stones and dust that is left over from the winter. And of course the street has to be completely empty during that time.

So be careful where you park your car these days. Always check the beginning of the street for those signs first.

Normally the non parking signs just apply for one day for a few hours. It might differ though so pay close attention. Otherwise your car has to be moved.

Caution! Roof avalanches!

The masses of snow and the warm temperatures during the last days are a dangerous combination. If the heavy snow falls down from the roofs it can cause serious damage. At the snow workers do their best to clean all the roofs. Don’t ignore the warning signs and keep your eyes open when walking through the streets.

Move your car

After heavy snowfall during the last days and weeks whole Helsinki has a white cover now. The city is now a winter wonderland.

Except for car drivers. They would rather describe it as hell. And if you happen to be one of them you don’t just have to drive extremely carefully. You also have to watch out for those signs.

They tell when the street is going to be cleaned. For that reason the street has to be completely empty during the announced time. Should you forget to move your car before that then the city will do that for you. And that might not be too cheap. So keep an eye open for new signs when you park during the winter.

Beetroot Block Party

Summer seems to be almost over but the sun is still warm and it’s probably one of the last chances for a street party this weekend. That’s why you should come to Viiskulma (five corners) in Punavuori.

Here the people from the area invite everyone for their amazing Punajuuri (Beetroot) Block Party tonight. The program starts already in the afternoon. There are activities for families, street performances, food and a lot of music already during the day.

In the night it’s time for the real party to start. Bands and DJs will perform in five different locations in the area. Check out the program on the official website.

Don’t miss it!
