Helsinki's Waterline

Did you know that Helsinki has over 130 km of coastline? Quite impressive, isn't it? Water is basically everywhere here. You can hardly miss it. The sea reaches deep into the city and even Töölönlahti, which looks like a lake is actually sea water.

Since water and the sea play such an important role for the cities and its inhabitants there is now an exhibition on Helsinki's waterline at Laituri.

Dreams of a better world

Building and the use of the built environment are the cause for many environmental problems. But on the other hand they can also help us find solutions to these problems.

Some of those solutions are displayed at Laituri at the moment. Dreams of a better world is an exhibition on sustanaible building and worth a visit.

Laituri is open from Monday to Saturday and the entrance is as always free of charge.

Creating the Future

Arkki, the School of Architecture for Children and Youth, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exhibition on architectural education. The exhibition at Laituri is open free of charge for everyone interested.

Till the end of May several different projects that the kids at Arkki have worked on are on display ranging from drawings to scale models. Works from all age groups (4 -19) are displayed.

New Horizons for a fast growing city

Helsinki is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Europe. It attracts businesses and with them people from all over Finland and the whole world.

The former cargo harbor Jätkäsaari is rapidly turning into an attractive living and business area. But also in many other parts of the city new buildings rise constantly.

To find out more about Helsinki’s plans for the future, new ideas for the city, about ongoing and already finished projects visit the Helsinki New Horizons exhibition at Laituri next to Kamppi Kauppakeskus. A sneak peek into Helsinki’s future

Today the City Planning Fair starts at Laituri. Till 13 April you can meet city planners and find out more about what the plans for your neighborhood and the entire city are.

On eleven stands you can familiarize yourself with projects coming up in the near future to make Helsinki an even more livable city. The topics include new single-family housing areas, the sea and beaches, the development of local centers, the development of Helsinki traffic, parking, traffic research, ecological sustainability and much more.

Pick your favorite design for the Crown Bridges

A big project for the Helsinki region is the connection of Kruununhaka and Kruunuvuorenranta via Korkeasaari by bridge. But how should this long bridge look like?

Ten international teams entered design suggestions and are competing for the project. But the decision is not made just by the City of Helsinki. The citizens are also asked to give their opinions.

Therefore all ten designs are displayed in Laituri at Kamppi till 9 March and everyone is welcome to give their comment on them. You also find more information on theprojects website.

For young city planners

Until February 16^th Laituri invites especially children to come and learn more about city planning. Together with the red elephant they will plan Fairy Tale City and learn lots of interesting new things about city planning.

And since city planning involves lots of good ideas the children are asked to get creative themselves and paint their dream houses.

Modernism in Helsinki

Laituri has an interesting exhibition on display again. Modernismia Helsingissä is about modern architecture in Helsinki. The exhibition displays thirty landmarks in the city that are influenced by modernism. 

Among the buildings chosen are hospitals, schools, cultural, sports and residence buildings. The selection is based on the register of DOCOMOMO, the international organization for the conservation of modern architecture.

Helsinki by bike

Helsinki is trying to become more bike-friendly. Creating new bike paths and trying to make cycling saver for cyclist plays an important role for the city planners.

To discuss the topic in public an exhibition was put up on Helsinki by bike. It can be seen at Laituri next to Kamppi shopping center.

At Fiilari people living in the city tell about their experiences cycling in Helsinki. They are quite critical and address several problems the city has to solve. To get more information on the exhibition and on cycling in Helsinki you should also check Fiilari’s Facebook page.

Laituri is open every day except Mondays and the exhibition is free of charge. You can still see it till 04.08.
