Kamppi’s well kept secret

People visiting Helsinki are often surprised that the city has just one Metro line. Surprisingly despite that the public transport system here is one of the best in the world. But did you know that originally Helsinki was supposed to have two Metro lines which were to cross each other at Kamppi?

Not just the plans for this project were ready. The second Metro level at Kamppi was even built. It was just never put into use. A map published by Helsingin Sanomat shows exactly where the second level is situated and a picture shows how it looks down there.

The second line was supposed to connect North and South. It was then later decided that trains from the main station should take over this purpose. For that reason the project was never finished. Instead it was decided that the existing Metro line should be continued westbound till Espoo which HSL is working on at the moment. The extension will be opened in fall 2014.

Coffee from the test-tube

La Torrefazione is no doubt one of the best cafés in Helsinki. But have you been to their second place at Kluuvi? Also Fratello sets standards when it comes to great coffee. And not just the taste convinces. It’s also fun to watch them preparing it.

Would you like to have some pastry with your cappuccino or latte macchiato? Well, they have a big variety. Or maybe you should even consider a ball of delicious Swiss Mövenpick ice cream.

Fratello’s location and interior might not be as great as at La Torrefazione. Anyway it is definitely a must for coffee lovers.

Tough way through the ice

The temperatures rose. Still the sea is covered by a thick layer of ice. Especially the smaller boats have their difficulties and are forced to use all the same way to get out of the harbor.

The cliffs of Salmisaari

At the far western end of Helsinki in Salmisaari one of the biggest and most modern sports centers of the capital region can be found. Salmisaaren Liikuntakeskus is especially popular for its huge climbing walls.

But it has much more to offer. Play beach volleyball, laser tag, bowling or pool, try archery or go to the gym. There is something for everyone.

The sports center is open daily from 9.00 till late in the evening. More information can be found from their website.
