Citizens' flashback

How would an exhibition look that is organized purely by the citizens of a city? No idea? Well, then have a look at the #flashback exhibition at Helsingin Kaupunki Museum.

All the photos displayed here have been selected by a group of Helsinki citizens. The group has also decided on the themes and the way it should be organized.

The entrance to #flashback is free and the exhibition can still be visited until the end of April.

Yhdessä - Together

Should you spend this weekend in Helsinki then visit the photo exhibition Yhdessä (Together) at the Main Railway Station Helsinki. In the exhibition that is still on display till Sunday photos are shown of people that share a special relationship. They share something – small or big – with each other. Their stories are all very different. Decide for yourself which one you find most impressive and moving.

The exhibition is free and after this weekend can still be seen online till the end of the year.

Street Photography – Shanghai vs. Helsinki

As part of Helsinki Day the photo exhibition Helsinki Street + Shanghai Coca will be opened today. It presents the people and lives of Helsinki on the one and Shanghai on the other hand.

The pictures from Shanghai come from photographer Coca Dai who lives and works in the city. His works have been shown at several prominent photography festivals around China. All the pictures from Helsinki have been made by the photographers of helsinkistreet.fi.

The official opening will be at 14:00. “Street Photography – Shanghai vs. Helsinki” will be the topic of the discussion starting at 18:00 with the photographers. The exhibition at Magito Studio is open for the public free of charge till August 3.

Photography Into Art

If you are interested in photography as an art form in Finland you should pay a visit to the Finnish Museum of Photography. The exhibition is based on a huge private collection by Erja Hannula and Jorma Hinkka. Pictures over three decades tell the unique story of how Finnish photography established itself as a fully-fledged art form. A diverse mixture of photos shows the different periods and changes photography underwent.

 The museum also displays an overview of the work of the renowned Finnish photographer Nelli Palomäki. She became internationally known by her classical black and white portraits. Some of the audience favorites can be seen along with some new works.

Both exhibitions are still on display till 21.04.2013. Tickets for the museum cost 6€/4€ (under 18-year-olds free).

Photography at Kaapeli

If you are interested in photography then the Finnish Museum of Photography (Suomen Valokuvataiteen Museo) at the Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas) in Salmisaari might be something for you. They host several exhibitions. One of them is quite interesting to get a better idea about the diversity of Helsinki and the people that live here. Its name is East-West-Ballte (Itä-Länsi-Battle). Two groups of young photographers are trying to show the differences between the east and the west of Helsinki. They took pictures of the people, their homes, their hobbies, streets, everything that gives an idea about their lifestyle. They put the pictures in contrast to each other. It is a small exhibition but really nice to see and interesting if you want to get a better understanding of Helsinki.

They also have three exhibition of K-G Ross on display. His pictures are all from the 50s and in his pictures he focuses on the people rather than landscape and architecture. On exhibition shows shootings for the Finnish fashion label Marimekko. In another one he captured life on Helsinki’s streets on the 50s. The third one deals with the mafia and its role in Sicilia.

Furthermore the museum shows exhibitions from Octavian Bâlea and Timo Kelaranta.

Ticket prices are 6 €/4€.
