Clean your carpet the Finnish way

You would probably clean your carpet at home, right? Well, that’s not the Finnish way. Here you wash it traditionally at the sea. Just for the wooden racks and piers are installed next to the sea at several places in the city. They are owned by the city of Helsinki and the use is for free.

First the carpets are washed with fresh (and luckily not so salty) sea water while sitting on the small pier. When it’s hopefully clean but dropping wet a machine comes into action that wrings out most of the water. After that the Finns just hang their carpet over one of the racks and leave for several hours. No worries, no one will steal it in the meantime.

If you want to try it out yourself, just go ahead. Just remember taking a look at the weather forecast before.
